“Should paramilitary flags been removed from northern ireland?”

I know I won’t be in northern ireland for much longer now, but this questions really interests me. I honestly think that both sides - notice, I’m not favouring “my side” (I.e. Protestants/unionists) in anyway - should remove their flags. Because if you remove this propaganda, you begin to eliminate the discrimination, ongoing hatred and fighting that is happening right now. However, I do think we should be allowed to fly our national flag without fear of being targeted/tormented because we’re proud of our nationality. I am british. I own a british passport, and I feel british. I am in no way irish, for I live in northern ireland, a british land. I feel that if I choose to fly a union jack, I should be able to do so. I wouldn’t do it to provoke anyone or start anything, I’d be flying it because I’m proud of my nationality. Now, that’s not to say that those who feel themselves to be irish, should be unable to fly the tricolour, quite the opposite. But the other side have to also do so without wanting to stimulate any type of fight. I’m not going to be narrow minded and say all unionists are angels, and republicans are mean evil people. However, when you face facts, if we fought back, we fought back because our rights were being infringed upon by republican/nationalists groups. I duno, I just think everyone here should… Not “promise” (for that, to me, trivialises a very serious issue) but something along those lines that if they fly their chosen national flag, it is purely because they are proud of who/what they are.

ANYWAY #rantover.
